Intrepid painter and decorator Alan Grego is putting away his paint brush and overalls to head off to the highest mountain in the world.

Mr Grego, of Crown Street, Dedham, will be joined by a team of adventurers heading off to Katmandu before trekking from a small village just outside it to the Everest base camp.

The trek will take about two weeks, but the group have been training for almost a year for the tough conditions they will face.

Mr Grego, 50, said he has already been promised about £1,600, which he will donate to St Helena Hospice.

Last year he and another group raised more than £7,000 by walking in the Himalayan foothills.

He will be joined by John Hill, of Dedham, Tony Howard, of Holton St Mary, Norman Van Root, and John and Lynne Acton, of Wrabness.

Mrs Acton will not be going to the base camp with the others. She will be helping at the maternity hospital in Katmandu until they return.

The group will fly out to Nepal on Friday, January 26...
